Does a loud banging noise echo through your house when you turn off a faucet? This alarming sound is known as a water hammer. At Express Plumbing & Rooter, we know how unsettling this can be and are here to help you understand what water hammer is and how to prevent it. Whether you are dealing with issues that need plumbing repair service or more complex matters like sewer repair and trenchless sewer line replacement, understanding water hammer is essential for maintaining a healthy plumbing system.

Understanding the Causes of Water Hammer

Water hammer, technically known as hydraulic shock, occurs when water in the pipes suddenly changes direction or stops abruptly. This sudden change causes a shockwave, resulting in the characteristic banging noise. Several factors can contribute to this phenomenon:

  • Quick-Closing Valves: Appliances with quick-closing valves, like dishwashers and washing machines, can cause water hammer when the water flow stops suddenly.
  • High Water Pressure: Excessive water pressure can exacerbate water hammer. Residential systems should typically maintain pressure between 40-80 psi.
  • Loose Pipes: Pipes that are not securely fastened can move more freely when a shockwave occurs, amplifying the noise.

Is Water Hammer Only an Issue for Homeowners?

While water hammer is often associated with residential plumbing, it is not exclusive to homes. Commercial buildings and industrial facilities can also experience water hammer. The principle remains the same: any plumbing system where water flow is abruptly altered can be susceptible. In commercial settings, the repercussions can be more severe due to the scale of the plumbing systems involved. Regular maintenance and professional services are necessary for residential and commercial properties to prevent and address water hammer issues.

Are Some Properties More Prone to Water Hammer Than Others?

Certain types of homes and plumbing systems are indeed more susceptible to water hammer. Older homes, for instance, often have outdated plumbing that may not cope well with modern water pressures and quick-closing valves. Homes with long, straight runs of pipe are more prone to experiencing hydraulic shock, as there are fewer bends and turns to absorb the shockwave. If you live in an older home or notice frequent banging noises in your pipes, it might be time to consult with a plumbing company. A professional assessment can determine whether your home’s plumbing needs updating or if additional measures, such as the installation of water hammer arrestors, are necessary.

Will Water Hammer Damage My Plumbing System?

Ignoring water hammer can lead to damage over time. The repeated shockwaves can cause pipes to weaken, joints to loosen, and fixtures to fail. This can result in leaks, water damage, and the need for extensive plumbing repairs. In severe cases, water hammer can even damage appliances connected to your plumbing system. Routine maintenance and timely repairs by a trusted plumber can prevent trouble. Implementing preventative measures, such as pressure regulators and water hammer arrestors, can protect your plumbing system from damage. Services like sewer line cleaning can help maintain your overall plumbing health, ensuring there are no blockages that could worsen water hammer issues.

How Will I Know That I Have a Water Hammer Issue?

Recognizing the signs of a water hammer problem early can save you from future repairs and extensive damage. Here are some common indicators:

  • Loud Banging Noises: The most obvious sign is a loud banging sound when turning off a faucet or when appliances stop their water intake.
  • Vibrating Pipes: If your pipes are vibrating or shaking, it could be due to the shockwave caused by water hammer.
  • Loose or Leaking Joints: Water hammer can cause pipe joints to loosen, leading to leaks and visible water damage.
