Today, there are non-invasive ways to repair damaged pipes while keeping the costs low. The two common trenchless methods used to fix pipes in a minimally invasive manner are pipe lining and pipe bursting. It’s important to understand how each one of them works in order to make an informed choice. In this article, Express Plumbing & Rooter outlines the differences between the two methods to help you understand which one is better. If you’re looking for a trusted plumbing repair service that can help you repair your sewer line, reach out to Express Plumbing & Rooter.

What is Pipe Lining?

Pipe lining is one of the common trenchless techniques plumbers use to restore leaking, cracked, clogged, or damaged pipes. Also known as cured-in-place pipe lining, this method involves lining the inside of a pipe with a resin coating that cures to leave the pipe even stronger than before. This is how pipe lining works: a plumber inserts the lining into the damaged pipe and inflates the lining so that it can attach to the pipe walls. The lining is left to harden for several hours, thereby creating a like-new pipe inside the old one. This trenchless method is recommended when you have minor to moderate pipe damage. In other words, you should opt for this method if the existing pipe is in relatively good condition. Just like other no-dig technologies, pipe lining is a cost-effective and non-invasive option for repairing damaged pipelines.

What is Pipe Bursting?

Pipe bursting is another common trenchless method that plumbers utilize for sewer repair. This process is exactly what the name suggests—a cone-shaped device is pulled through the damaged pipe, breaking it into pieces. The device simultaneously pulls a new pipe through the cavity, creating a brand new pipe in place of the old one. The cone-shaped tool is inserted through two entry and exit points, thereby minimizing the need to dig the entire lawn to access the pipe. Pipe bursting is a great alternative to the messy and cumbersome traditional sewer repairs.

When Should You Employ Pipe Bursting?

Pipe bursting is recommended for restoring damaged sewer lines or water lines running underground. Whether your pipes are corroded, they’ve been invaded by tree roots, or age has taken its toll on them, this trenchless sewer line replacement method can eliminate the need for trenching. In addition to being minimally invasive, pipe bursting takes a shorter time to complete compared to traditional pipe repair. If the job is handled by a qualified plumber, trenchless pipe bursting can be completed in as little as one day.

Trenchless pipe bursting is an excellent option if you’re looking to upgrade to a larger pipe size. Perhaps you’ve added more bedrooms to your house and you want to install a larger sewer pipe to accommodate the increased demand, or you anticipate adding more fixtures in the future. Whatever the case, a larger pipe will ensure smooth flow of wastewater and prevent issues like backflow and low water pressure. Pipe bursting allows you to pull a larger pipe through the existing pipe without the need to dig up your property. It minimizes the time it takes to replace the pipes as well as the project cost.
