Hydro jet plumbing and snake draining are two of the most popular methods for clearing clogged drains and sewer lines. Each method has its own pros and cons. Here at Express Plumbing & Rooter, we take pride in offering top-notch sewer line services, including trenchless sewer line replacement. As an experienced plumbing company, we understand how both hydro jetting and snake draining work. In this article, we’ll go over the differences between hydro jet plumbing and snake draining to help you decide which method is better for your situation.

Understanding Hydro Jet Plumbing

Hydro jetting is a method of cleaning drains and sewer lines using high-pressure water. A specialized hose is used to shoot water through your pipes at a very high pressure (usually around 4000 psi). The forceful water jet blasts away any clogs or buildup, including grease, soap scum, hair, and even tree roots.

Advantages of Hydro Jet Plumbing

  • Highly effective: Hydro jetting is extremely effective when it comes to sewer line cleaning. The powerful force of pressurized water dislodges just about any clog and forces it through the system. Believe it or not, there isn’t any blockage the pressurized streams of water can’t remove. Whether you’re dealing with invasive tree roots that have found their way into your sewer lines or mineral buildup resulting from hard water, hydro jetting
  • No harmful chemicals involved: Hydro jetting is a chemical-free sewer repair method that utilizes nothing but high-pressure water. This makes it a green, eco-friendly alternative for cleaning sewer lines. You won’t have to worry about harsh chemical drain cleaners damaging your sewer pipes.
  • Prevents future clogs: A drain snake merely pierces through the debris in your pipes. This may be a short-term solution, but a new clog may form before long, especially if you’re careful about what you put down the drains. Hydro jet plumbing reduces the likelihood of future clogs by eliminating the root cause of the problem.

Understanding Snake Draining

Snake draining, also known as augering or drain snaking, is a method used to clear blockages in pipes. It involves using a drain snake or auger (a long, flexible metal cable) to break up or retrieve the clog. Snake draining is recommended for clearing clogs deep in the drain. Snaking a clogged drain is a fairly simple process that can be done by most homeowners. However, there are unique circumstances when you might need professional help from a trusted plumbing repair service.

Advantages of Snake Draining

  • Inexpensive: This is perhaps the biggest advantage of using a drain snake for clearing clogs. The tool is relatively inexpensive to purchase or rent compared to hydro jetting. Besides, snaking is a DIY job that can be done by most homeowners with basic plumbing knowledge.
  • Effectiveness: This method is highly effective in removing minor blockages, such as those caused by grease buildup, food waste, and hair.
  • Minimal disruption: Unlike hydro jetting, snake draining requires minimal equipment and setup. This makes it a convenient sewer line cleaning option for many homeowners.
  • Non-invasive: Unlike harsh chemical drain cleaners, drain snaking doesn’t introduce harmful substances into your pipes. As long as you use the tool correctly, snake draining is a reliable way to clear drain clogs.

Is Hydro Jetting Better Than Snake Draining?

Hydro jetting is considered more effective than snake draining for most clogs. While it costs more than snake draining, hydro jet plumbing removes all debris, including stubborn clogs and tree roots. If you’re dealing with a minor clog, snake draining might suffice. However, hydro jetting is the preferred method for addressing recurring clogs, mineral buildup, or tree root issues.
