Not all hot water heaters are created equal. From traditional tank models to solar-powered models, there are several options to choose from. The lifespan of your water heater can vary significantly depending on the type you select. Understanding these differences can help you make an informed decision when choosing a new heater or maintaining your current one.

In this guide, Express Plumbing & Rooter explores the different water heater options available, along with their average lifespans, to help you make an informed decision for your home. Express Plumbing & Rooter is the name you can trust for all of your water heater service needs and trenchless sewer line replacement.

How Long Do Storage Tank Hot Water Heaters Last?

According to water heater specialists, a storage tank water heater should last 8-12 years. With regular inspection and flushing, a tank-style water heater should serve you reliably for well over a decade. It’s also worth mentioning that the life expectancy of a water heater depends on the quality of the installation. If you want to get the most out of your water heater, make sure it’s installed by highly trained and experienced plumbers. Here at Express Plumbing & Rooter, we specialize in tankless water heater installation and water heater repair. When you’re looking for a reputable plumbing repair service that offers dependable water heater services and sewer repair, reach out to Express Plumbing & Rooter.

How To Make a Storage Tank Water Heater Last Longer

  • Install a water softener if you have hard water in your home
  • Insulate the tank and pipes
  • Flush the tank at least once a year
  • Schedule a professional maintenance check-up once a year with a trusted plumbing service
  • Replace the anode rod as needed
  • Set the water heater temperature between 120 degrees Fahrenheit and 140 degrees Fahrenheit

How Long Do Tankless Hot Water Heaters Last?

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand water heaters, do not store water; hence, they can last up to 20 years. This is longer than traditional storage tank water heaters, which typically last around 8-12 years. The quality of the water in your home has a huge impact on the lifespan of your tankless water heater. Hard water can reduce the life expectancy of a tankless water heater by 2 or more years. That’s why we recommend calling a nearby plumbing service to test your water and determine whether you need to install a water softener. A water softening system will not only prolong the lifespan of your water heater, but it will also reduce cleaning time. Tankless water heaters offer several benefits, including endless hot water supply and energy efficiency. A gas-powered tankless water heater can save you about $108 in energy costs per year, while an electric-powered unit can lower your energy costs by around $44.

How To Make a Tankless Water Heater Last Longer

  • Schedule annual checkups with a qualified plumbing service
  • Ensure proper venting to get rid of combustion gases and prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup
  • Install a water softener to reduce scale buildup

How Long Do Heat Pump Hot Water Heaters Last?

The average life expectancy of a heat pump water heater ranges from 10 to 15 years. However, proper installation and routine maintenance are essential to getting the most out of a heat pump hot water system.

How Long Do Solar Hot Water Heaters Last?

A properly installed and maintained solar water heater could last anywhere from 10 to 25 years. Solar water heaters have fewer moving parts compared to conventional heaters, reducing wear and tear. There's no combustion chamber or complex heating elements to worry about. Moreover, solar heaters rely on the sun's energy, reducing the strain on internal components compared to constantly running on electricity or gas.

Let me tell you folks what I went through last night after I came home from a party I walked in my bathroom and saw the bathtub and toilet overflowing with black water so I immediately went online and found a company this company was express plumbing and router the girl on the phone was really really friendly and nice she assured me that my problem will be solved and I should have no worries the technician will be arriving in 60 to 90 minutes she told me well that was true because he was here in 45 minutes  The technician came and unclog the drain for only amazing $55 when he came in to my house he was wearing booties so he said would not dirty my carpet that's a plus because I have white carpets in my house I would really recommend this company to my family and friends and whoever has a plumbing problem thank you express plumbing and rooter.
