As a homeowner, you should equip yourself with a bit of knowledge to diagnose, troubleshoot, and fix common toilet problems. In this article, Express Plumbing & Rooter explains how to deal with common toilet problems.

  • Toilet Won’t Stop Running

A running toilet can waste thousands of gallons of water per day, depending on its size. The problem often lies in a faulty flapper or a worn-out flush valve. A malfunctioning flapper won’t provide a tight seal, thereby allowing water to escape from the tank and into the bowl. Similarly, a worn-out flush valve might not shut off completely, and this can lead to a continuously running toilet. You may be able to identify the culprit behind a running toilet by taking off the lid and inspecting the components of the toilet tank. Luckily, the solution is as simple as replacing the faulty components.

  • Clogged Toilet

Did you know that nearly 20% of homeowners frequently experience clogged toilets? A survey conducted by Google Consumer Survey estimated that millions of households in the United States deal with clogged toilets every month. A good number of homeowners admitted to flushing a wide range of non-flushable items, and others had not scheduled an inspection for over a year. Luckily, a clogged toilet can be fixed using a plunger, a drain snake, or a combination of baking soda and vinegar. If the clog is stubborn and won’t clear after several attempts, call a professional plumber for toilet repair and sewer repair. Sewer line issues are also known to cause slow-draining fixtures. Call Express Plumbing & Rooter if you’re looking for a professional plumbing company to inspect and fix your toilet or sewer line.

  • Toilet Rocks To And Fro

A toilet rocking back and forth means either the mounting bolts are loose or the wax ring is damaged or worn out. This problem may seem harmless until you have a major toilet leak or floor damage. Besides, a rocking toilet can ruin your bathroom experience and make you dread using it. If this is a problem you’re experiencing, try to tighten the mounting bolts using a socket wrench and replace the wax ring. However, replacing an old wax ring can be challenging for a DIYer. If you have any doubts about your ability to replace an old wax ring, consult with a professional plumbing repair service.

  • Toilet Not Refilling

This is a common toilet problem, often resulting from a faulty fill valve and a clogged inlet hole. A fill valve controls the flow of water into a toilet tank after it’s flushed. Over time, this part of the flush valve assembly can wear out and lead to the toilet not refilling. Another common cause of this problem is a faulty overflow tube. These parts are inexpensive and easy to replace for someone with basic plumbing skills. If you’re out of your depth, call a plumbing company specializing in toilet repair and trenchless sewer line replacement for professional assistance.

  • Leaking Toilet

A leaking toilet can lead to water damage, mold growth, and increased water bills. The common source of toilet leaks is loose mounting bolts. This is an easy fix that only requires a screwdriver, socket wrench, and basic plumbing skills. Start by removing the plastic caps on each side of the toilet base and tightening the nuts on each loose bolt until you feel resistance. If the toilet is still rocking, call a nearby plumbing service for help.
